The Triangle #5

From The Geometry of the Last Supper by Raphaël Mouterde. It shows the triangle on the grid and the arc created by the rotation of the side of the triangle to the vertical. The angle covered by the arc is the same as the angle formed by the hands of James and Thomas.

It’s worth pausing for a moment to look more closely at the arc we discussed in the previous post. This arc was created by rotating the triangle’s side so that the top point A, aligns with one of the grid's verticals.

In the image above, I've highlighted the angle of this arc in yellow and reported it to the hand gestures of James and Thomas. As we can see, the angle formed by their hands is strikingly close to the angle of the arc – hence the name I've given it: the Arc of Thomas.

The Arc of Thomas has already provided us with the height of the windows, but it has yet to play another important role.

Thomas raises his index finger towards the sky. Could he be giving us a clue ?
